The right to express myself has special meaning for me as I grew up in a family where I was not able to speak freely.
I believe that many people are shut down from speaking up in families who have certain religious or political beliefs.
I grew up hearing children should be seen and not heard, and You may not talk about such things as long as you are living under my roof, and Your opinion doesn’t matter.
These kinds of beliefs shut down my ability to speak up for myself as I became an adult.
After getting some counseling, I now see that free speech isn’t just about speaking up in public, but it is important for me to be able to speak up to my friends, family and co-workers without fear of being silenced or judged.
Freedom of expression means speaking my truth in every life situation.
